Battery Electric was established in January 1989. A small dedicated team with vast experience in the field of traction motor control was soon approached by the Mining Industry to do research into the then problematic area of Solid State Battery Mine Locomotive Control. A new approach was adopted to address the total battery locomotive system and not only the individual parts of the system.
The management of the total mine locomotive system i.e. Locomotive (motors), Controller, Battery & Battery charger.
The Company has since grown to a compliment of 65 people, most with previous experience in the battery underground locomotive field, some dating back to the 70’s and 80’s. We are proud to have highly qualified, graduated electronic engineers experienced in motor control and microprocessor control, supported by five technicians that achieved their qualifications whilst employed by Battery Electric.
Our current market share exceeds 50% of the total Mining Industry due to the wide range of controller available to the industry.
Our technical team is supported by experienced technical sales and administration personnel with an infrastructure of representatives in all the major areas assisted by their service support personnel. All our equipment is of local design and manufacture for our unique South African mining conditions and can be tailored to suit the customer’s requirements.
Battery Electric (Pty) Ltd is also a recognized supplier of the latest requirement from the Mining Industry to produce the “New Era” type Front Driven Train complete with a Portable Remote.
Through perseverance, assistance and liaison with the Mining Industry Battery Electric was able to produce a range of controllers to cover all the underground locomotive controller requirements, including micro-processor controlled, AC overhead trolley line locomotive controllers, 250 volt DC trolley line controllers, AC and DC Three shot auto reclose units for overhead trolley line supplies.
Battery Electric with their in state of the art Mine Locomotive Controls have produced in excess of 4000 units into the mining and tunneling industry, whereof the Modular Mosfet and “ICON” IGBT units are currently the predominant units used.
The Company is located at their newly built premises in Jet Park Boksburg accommodating a separate sheet metal shop, electronic PCB, and final equipment assembly area.
The facility and staff can accommodate an increase of more than 50% of the current capacity.
